What Maine permit holders should know

Maine uses mutual-resident reciprocity. Because Maine is permitless-carry for 21+, most adult visitors lawfully carrying in their home state may also carry in Maine regardless of reciprocity.

Notable Maine restrictions

  • Permitless concealed carry effective October 15, 2015 for those 21+ (18+ for active/honorably discharged military)
  • Maine only recognizes resident permits from states that recognize Maine's resident permits in return
  • Carrier must immediately notify any law enforcement officer of possession of a loaded firearm at the start of an encounter

Armanac reviewed this Maine entry on May 17, 2026. We check state police, attorney general, licensing-agency, and legislative material, and keep formal reciprocity separate from permitless carry.
