What Iowa permit holders should know

Iowa's universal recognition statute means any other state's valid permit is honored when the holder is a non-resident. Iowa is also a permitless-carry state for adults 21+.

Notable Iowa restrictions

  • Universal recognition under Iowa Code 724.11A: Iowa honors any valid out-of-state permit held by a non-resident
  • Permitless carry effective July 1, 2021 for those 21+ who can lawfully possess a handgun
  • Permit-to-Carry-Weapons still issued for reciprocity purposes
