What Illinois permit holders should know

Illinois recognizes no out-of-state CCW permits. Only residents of designated 'substantially similar' states may apply for an Illinois non-resident CCL.

Notable Illinois restrictions

  • Illinois does NOT recognize any other state's concealed carry license
  • Non-residents from 'substantially similar' states (currently AR, ID, MS, NV, TX, VA) may apply for an Illinois CCL
  • Non-residents may transport legally encased/unloaded firearms in a vehicle under FOPA
  • FOID card required to possess firearms/ammunition in IL
  • Must immediately disclose presence of firearm to law enforcement on stop

Armanac reviewed this Illinois entry on May 17, 2026. We check state police, attorney general, licensing-agency, and legislative material, and keep formal reciprocity separate from permitless carry.
